Unseasonal rainfall in Saurashtra

RAJKOT, Date :- 21/10/2011 :

Farmers in Saurashtra region are worried a lot for the last three days as unseasonal rain continued to lash parts of the region. According to district flood control room officials, it rained sporadically in Bhavnagar, Amreli and Junagadh districts.

According to Junagadh district flood control room officials, on Wednesday, Manavadar topped the list with 25 mm rainfall within an hour. Trees and electric polls fell due to stormy wind with rain. Two domestic animals were killed due to lightning in Junagadh district on Tuesday evening.

The major rainfall was reported in Keshod (20 mm), Talala (7 mm) and Vanthali (16 mm) rainfall. On Tuesday, Keshod had received 17 mm rainfall, while Mendarda had received 59 mm rainfall in Junagadh district.

Farmers were preparing to harvest kharif crops in certain parts of the region, but the unseasonal rainfall may play spoilsport for them even after receiving good monsoon for their crops. 'Now, we are harvesting groundnut from the field to prepare our farms for Rabi season, but this rain affects groundnut crops and its quality and the grass which come out from it after harvesting. Stormy weather affected standing cotton crops as well,' a groundnut cultivator from Junagadh Menshi Sariya said.

It was cloudy in Rajkot city on Wednesday evening and light showers were experienced in parts of city. However, weather officials have not issued any warning or rain forecast so far.
